Janowski Gardens Cookbook

Hello Elmira,
Well, I finally did it. I am very happy to announce that my cookbook is available. Here’s the press release:

HEALTHFUL HISTORIC COOKBOOK PUBLISHED

What happens when you stir up recipes with fresh vegetables and the history of a German family that emigrates to Elmira, New York in 1872?

Author, local historian, and cook, Diane Janowski answers this question and more in the Janowski Gardens Cookbook, a collection of her favorite recipes. Janowski Gardens Cookbook offers healthy-eating recipes ranging from soups and sauces, meat, poultry and fish, eggs and cheese, to desserts. Every recipe includes at least one vegetable ingredient grown at Janowski Gardens and it’s all served up with the history, humor and wit for which Diane is well known.

Interspersed throughout the book are photos and stories of the Janowski family and farm, one of Elmira’s best-kept secret wonderful places. Janowski Gardens has been a family-owned and operated vegetable growing enterprise on Esty Street on Elmira’s Southside for 134 years.

Diane Janowski, a local history writer in Elmira, New York, who served as the editor of the Chemung Historical Journal from 1999 to 2006, now publishes the New York History Review. Janowski has written two other history books this year through New York History Review Press - The Great Inter-State Fair, Elmira, New York 1890, and Victorian Pride – Forgotten Songs of Central New York 1841-1885.

New York History Review Press is proud to release the Janowski Gardens Cookbook (112 pp., $18.95) available at:

A Good Time at the Chemung County Fair

Hello Elmira,
Last week was the Chemung County Fair. Janowski Gardens did very well in the Farm Produce category - see attached photo. We received 9 first prize blue ribbons for Swiss chard, yellow beans, cauliflower, corn, beets, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, and green peppers. We received 2 second prize red ribbons for pickles and tomatoes.

Other than that, it’s been hot and dry. We’ve been irrigating round the clock. Moving those pipes is a very hard job by itself.

My edamame (soybeans) are finally ready and I will have some at Wisner Market. They have been a struggle for me to grow them – Japanese beetles really like them, and they are planted in a place where I’ve had to hand-water them for many weeks now.

Also, new this week are our heirloom tomatoes – we have two kinds - Pruden's Purple and Brandywine. They are the best tomatoes I have ever eaten. Denny and I had BLTs yesterday with heirloom tomatoes. Oh my gosh are they good. They are much meatier than regular tomatoes.

This week at Elmira’s Wisner Market we will have corn, tomatoes (regular and heirloom), beets, eggplants, melons, squashes, lettuce, beans, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, collard greens, and nice little heads of cabbage – perfect for two people, green peppers, hot peppers, and if they’re not hot enough for you we also have jalapenos. We love jalapenos at our house. I put them in everything.

And pass this email on to anyone who may like to come.

Please remember that Wisner Market opens at 10:00AM.
